What this shows: for each calendar day, the Bitcoin price
divided by
the Jan-1 price of the same year (a ratio: 1.0 = flat vs the Jan-1 level,
0.692 = down 30.8% year-to-date). Every year from 2011 becomes one curve
aligned by day-of-year, so you can compare how far BTC is into its yearly
range on any given date across different years. The current year is drawn
in red; historical years in gray.
Presidential cycle: years are grouped by their position in the US
presidential cycle (elections held in November of 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020,
2024, ...):
year 1 (post-election: 2013, 2017, 2021, 2025),
midterm (2014, 2018, 2022, 2026),
year 3 (pre-election: 2011,
2015, 2019, 2023),
election year (2012, 2016, 2020, 2024). The page
loads with the current year selected; the dropdown above the chart changes
which year is compared (2011 to the present). The highlighted year is always
compared against its own cycle group: the orange line is the
average of the other years in that group, the light-gray pair is
the
min/max envelope, and the shaded band is the group
average ± 1 standard deviation (dispersion of the group years'
daily values across the year; each group has its own SD). When 2027
begins the page will automatically default to 2027 (a year-3 year) and
compare it against the year-3 set; and so on.
Data: daily BTC/USD market price from

(free, no key). 2010 is excluded (no reliable daily prices). Leap days
(Feb 29) are folded into Feb 28 so every year shares the same 365-day axis.
